If you don’t look after our own body, you will indeed suffer. Unfortunately, it could be that you haven’t been looking after your body for quite some time before the signs of your misdeeds show up. In today’s heavily computerised world, workers spend a lot of time sitting down, bending over desks, clicking at keyboards and slouching. It’s now time to think of putting the situation right! There’s a bad back, a painful neck and shoulders and there’s RSI, that repetitive strain injury that comes from making the same hand movements regularly and over a long period of time. I’m going to call these the ‘more obvious’ problems.

But then there are other conditions that you might not realise can come from slouching or any other shape of bad posture. There’s vertigo, which can come from you not holding your head at an eye-to-monitor horizontal angle. Looking high or looking low can cause problems with the neck which, unlike ordinary neck ache, can bring on a lack of balance, a drunken-like disorientation and extreme sickness.

There’s also a chance of stomach problems and organ disorders, as slouching means that your stomach and organs are fighting for space in your reduced torso and crushing your life equipment for several hours a day isn’t going to extend your years, is it?
Need I go on?

Okay, so supporting your body, getting your shoulders up there where they should be, giving your lower back a comfortable hug with the support elements of a good ergonomic office chair, adjusting the chair height and also adjusting the tilt of both the seat pad and chair back to make sure your thighs are fully supported and your feet happily touch the floor, now all makes sense, doesn’t it?

But let’s not forget your arms and hands. A good ergonomic office chair will offer all-singing and all-dancing armrests which, with three way adjustments (back and forward, up and down and also in and out), will make sure there is no pressure on your shoulder or upper arm and that your lower arm and hand glide towards that all-important keyboard, ready to tap away the day.

Correct Posture at Work

Getting the consistent correct posture at work is difficult in today’s busy offices with hot desking and mobile working. The most important things are a good ergonomic chair and a suitable desk. Even if you have a suitable office chair and a bulky desk you might find that it is difficult to get in close to your computer and work area of your desk.

If you can’t get into your desk because the arms are in the way then you end up adjusting the arms down and then that is defeating the object of having a office chair with height adjustable arms in the first place. Then if your chair has fixed arm then you’re stuffed because you end up getting into stressful postures while working on your computer. What’s more office chairs that have fixed arms are bad from the start as you will get into the habit of slouching into the chair so that your elbows will rest on the arm pads which then leads to aches and pains related to bad posture.

So what can one do to sort that out?

Well the first thing is to get a good ergonomic office chair and that is at least 60% and then the next thing is a good office desk. A ergonomic height adjustable desk is most probably the best bet as you can be standing or sitting. Standing can be an advantage if you have telephone call to make as your body is extended and so your voice will be more dynamic. Then when you have work on your computer then you can lower the desk to your perfect height.
